The siege of Petersburg began in mid-June 1864 after a series of bungled Union attacks that should have captured the lightly defended city failed. Once Lee’s army rushed south of the James River and into defenses, however, it was no longer possible to quickly take the vital rail and production center. Grant settled into a methodical siege, long lines of trenches sprang up, and both Richmond and Petersburg became locked into a siege-style combat that would not end until April 1865.
